What to do with the kids the Remembrance Day Long Weekend in Greater Moncton (Nov 8-11)
Welcome to another weekend filled with possibilities for family adventures!
We usually post things chronologically here, but we’re going to start this weekend’s round up with information on Remembrance Day services happening on Monday, November 11. Then we’ll continue with the general Friday through Sunday events, followed by activities & attractions that are always an option, and wrap it up with a few things to look forward to in the coming weeks. (We are trying to find time to create a post just of Santa parades & Christmas markets for you, too!)
REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICES 2024
Looking for ways to talk with your children about Remembrance Day before heading to a ceremony? Books are always a great way to help you introduce a topic, as are crafts! Save an empty egg carton to create a simple wreath and spend the time together talking about what the poppy symbolizes.
A great option for families looking for an outing that aligns with the day is a visit to the Albert County Museum. Albert County had one of the highest enlistment percentages in Canada during the First World War, with men – and boys – from the community participating in each major battle. In tribute to the community’s contributions, the museum has built a replica WWI trench inside, filled with local memorabilia and information on New Brunswick’s 26th Battalion. The museum is also home to one of only five WWI German field guns captured during the war. It will be open from 1-4pm; admission is by donation.
- Alma‘s Remembrance Day services are held Sunday at 10:30am.
- The Albert County Historical Society hosts a sunrise service at the museum, starting at 7am. The flag will be lowered, a piper will play, poems will be read, and poppy crosses and wreaths will be laid. Refreshments in the Community Hall to follow. The Museum will be open from 1-4pm; admission by donation to the Hillsborough Legion’s Poppy Fund.
- At 10am there will be an indoor church service at the Salisbury Legion at 10am, followed by a service outside at the cenotaph at 10:45am. Everyone is welcome to come inside for hot chocolate after, and there’s a sit-down roast beef dinner at 5pm.
- The Sunny Brae Legion traditionally hosts a parade from the Legion to the Massey Avenue Cenotaph and back.
- Dieppe gathers at École Mathieu-Martin, with service personnel forming up outside and parading indoor. A reception follows at the Golden Age Club.
- The largest Moncton service is held at the Moncton Coliseum, starting at 10:30am.
