Thanksgiving Weekend with the Family in Moncton
Thanksgiving Weekend is here – can you believe it?! Fall seems to be slipping by so quickly; how many items have you marked off on our Fall Bucket List yet? We’re hoping to hit three by the end of this weekend, including a stop by a corn maze and apple orchard! We hope you have a fabulous weekend, however you spend it … but here are some fun ideas you might want to consider!
The Dieppe Boys & Girls Club is celebrating the opening of their Lakeburn Rocks Climbing Wall this Thursday night at 6:30pm.
NB Afro Fest is happening this weekend, with lots of great events to enjoy. The festival kicks off Friday with free event featuring performances representing the African Diaspora, free African face painting, and more at the Dieppe Arts Centre. Saturday features a series of workshops, including children’s activities, dance, drumming, and more at the centre, and the whole festival wraps up with a family-friendly Gala at Casino New Brunswick.
The Moncton Optimist Chess Club is back for another season, meeting at Edith Cavell School on Friday evenings at 6:30pm. This is open to students from kindergarten to Grade 12; cost is $2.50 per session.
Riverview’s Bricks4KidzNB is starting a Friday night Robotics class for children.
Trueman Blueberry Farms is offering a flashlight visit to its corn maze Friday night. You can find details on all the local mazes, orchards, and more in our fall round up!
It’s another eventful weekend at Kouchibouguac National Park, with a pumpkin decorating contest, family wash toss tournament, and the annual Mawiomi, a spiritual event with traditional songs, drumming, dancing, and more.
Snow hills make perfect fall getaways! Ride the Alpine Chair Lift to the top of the mountain to enjoy the view on Saturday during Poley Mountain’s annual Fall Festival. There will also be wagon rides, a BBQ, kids’ activities, music, and more. Free for 2018-2019 season pass holders, $10 for adults, and $5 for children under 12.
The first Saturday of each month is Play Connexion Café at 1620 Rue Champlain, featuring bouncy castles, games, face painting, crafts, and more. Free for all, from 10am until noon.
Saturday morning there’s an interesting workshop happening called Moncton Indie Birth , a free exchange of information open to everyone.
Indigo is celebrating Kidsgiving on Saturday, inviting youth to the store to create gratitude journals and notes for others.
Saturday is Hatch Day at Toys R Us; come watch live hatchings and an exclusive Hatchimals giveaway (while supplies last, limit one per customer) at 11am.
Saturday’s Family Favourite feature at Cineplex is Sing for just $2.99 per person at 11am.
Michael’s has lots of crafting fun this month, including a craft pumpkin decorating session Saturday afternoon (buy the pumpkin, supplies provided to decorate) and Halloween-themed crafts for Kids Club (charge $2-$5).
Did you catch my Times & Transcript column last weekend? John Norman’s visit to our region is this Saturday evening, at Riverside Consolidated School. A great chance for those interested in community development to come together and exchange ideas.
The Moncton Wildcats host the Armada on Saturday night at the Avenir Centre.
Sunday is a lovely chance to explore and enjoy Broadleaf Ranch. Their famous Sunday Brunch is on from 10am until 2pm, and this weekend from 11am until 2pm there are free tractor trolley rides and tours of their new glamping units – the Lighthouse, the Covered Bridge, and the Chuckwagon. Enjoy the view and enter for a change to win a free stay!
There’s a great series of workshops happening on several Sundays this month and next at Resurgo Place teaching the basics of sewing. This week it’s all about buttons! (And don’t forget a new temporary exhibit is opening Saturday; it looks super cool!)
The Moncton Library is offering a bilingual Minecraft playing session on the first Sunday of the month, for ages six to 10. Registration is required; 869-6000 option 2. You can use the library computers and snacks are provided.
Wrap up your long weekend with a treat from Gojis and support the Harrison Trimble High School Field Hockey team.
It’s also a great weekend to take the family swimming or skating – or both! In addition to their regular Saturday and Sunday public swims, the YMCA is holding a holiday open swim on Monday from 1:30-3:30pm. Dieppe offers swimming options throughout the weekend as well as Monday from 2pm to 3:55pm. Many of the indoor skating rinks are opening for the season, too. Shediac has free family skating Friday mornings and Saturday evenings, as well as Monday morning. Petitcodiac’s season begins on Monday, with an open skate in the afternoon.
