Natalie Davison on Raising Teens Who Are Ready to Leave Home | Pickle Planet Podcast S9E5
High school graduation season pretty much begins when senior year starts. Photo sessions, prom outfits, post-secondary applications. It’s all underway in the first few weeks of the final year of school. So this seems like the perfect time to also talk about the things we as parents need to be doing to prepare these kids to head off into the world on their own.
You can find of all sorts of ‘must teach them before they leave’ lists – laundry rules, cooking basics, street safety, and so on. But let’s be honest – those are life skills that friends & the internet can teach our teens when they need them. The real work is in trying to make sure the kids know how to find friends, to speak up for themselves, and to ask for help when they need it. How do we give our kids the tools to find belonging in a new environment?
Way back when, we wrapped up Season One of this podcast with Natalie Davison talking about her year of Nat Leave. (Listen to that episode here.) She talked about helping her sons navigate the early elementary school years and how the work they did as a family was playing out in middle school. Now, those boys are wrapping up their first six weeks of university and she’s back to talk about the ways in which she tried to prepare them to leave home – and a little bit about what it means to prepare yourself as a parent, too!
