What to Do with the Kids this Weekend in Moncton (Aug 17-19)

Welcome to another fantastic summer weekend, everyone!

Community Days are underway in Salisbury, with lots of fun planned. Thursday afternoon there’s a free life-sized Candy Land game behind the library and the Village is planning to show Jumanji at Highland Park at dusk. On Friday it’s Kids & Family Day at Highland Park, with BBQ, water games, and more from 10am until 2pm, followed by the annual Chili Challenge and Lawn Tractor Races in the evening. Saturday starts at 7am with a pancake breakfast at the Lions Club ($8 for adults, $3 for ages six to 10, free for preschoolers), yard sales throughout the Village, the annual parade through Main Street at noon with a market and food court following. There will be free wagon rides, face painting, and bouncy castles, a presentation from Party Pets, a free swim from 2pm to 6pm at the Lions Outdoor Pool and a lobster roll supper. Sunday the fun wraps up with an 11am community walk at Highland Park, a picnic BBQ at noon, and another free afternoon swim.

Movies are back at Victoria Park for August, with Thursday evening showings along with games and snacks for sale, supporting the United Way. This week it’s Paddington 2, followed by Cars 3 on August 23 and Moana on August 30. Thursdays are also movie nights in Dieppe, with this weeks’ feature The Breadwinner. Sunday the Moncton Library is showing Rio in English and French. On Tuesday, you can catch Captain Underpants in the Park in Riverview.

At the Sussex Drive In this weekend it’s The Incredibles 2 & The Spy Who Dumped Me, while Shediac’s Neptune Theatre is showing Mama Mia, The Spy Who Dumped Me, The Meg, and Unfriended: Dark Web. Cineplex’s Family Favourites is Peter Rabbit, showing Saturday and Wednesday for $2.99; check out the extra showings of several movies coming up later this month!

For a different movie experience, check out the Mighty Kids ‘drive in’ in at the Bouctouche Farmers’ Market Friday night. On the big screen will be Ferdinand, with carnival games available before the show begins. There is a cardboard car decorating competition for those who wish to enter; check out the post for ideas!

Looking to support some up-and-coming talent? The Greater Moncton Girls+ Rock Camp is holding a concert Friday night at Riverview Middle School, featuring four bands formed at this summer’s camp. Admission is $5 and band merch will be available!

If you’re up for a road trip, this weekend is the annual Nova Scotia Gem Show in Parrsboro, with dozens of vendors with minerals, fossils, metal work, and more.

Saturday marks the official kick off of the 2018 Pride celebrations, with a flag raising at Moncton City Hall. (The parade is next weekend, but there are great events all week long, like the Rainbows, Trees & Maple S’mores walk Monday night!)

Sunday is sure to be a great day in Shediac, with lots of extra fun planned at the Market. There will be an LGBTQ2+ flag raising at 9am, a Peace & Friendship Pow Wow at 9:30am (the first to take place in Shediac in the past 100 years!), and a performance from Dans’Encorps at 11:30am.

Sunday evening in Riverfront Park, the folks from Woven Cultures & Katimavik invite you to join them for a free event celebrating dance.

And those are our picks for great family fun this weekend! Of course, you can find many other ongoing attractions and ideas on our MEGA list, including all the indoor options if the weather decides to dampen outdoor festivities!

Happy adventuring, Pickle Planet readers! (Oh, and if you need some company along the way – or while you’re home doing the dishes or making dinner – we’d love for you to join us by tuning in to the Pickle Planet Podcast!
