What to Do with the Kids This Weekend in Moncton (Sept 28-30)

The leaves are beginning to turn and the fall festivals are in full swing! Read on for so many amazing ideas for ways to get out and enjoy our communities with your family this weekend. (And if you still can’t find what you’re looking for here, check out our MEGA LIST of attractions and our round up of apple orchards, corn mazes, and more. And be on the lookout for our round up of Halloween events coming soon!)

One of the neatest ideas around is the annual costume swap at the Moncton library, and it’s happening this weekend! Stop by on Friday (10am-5pm) or Saturday morning (10am-noon) to drop off a costume and get a swap ticket. Return between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday to use your ticket to claim a new-to-you costume. There’ll be some Halloween crafts on hand, as well. Call 869-6000 (option 2) for more information.

Riverview’s Harvest Festival is underway, with events throughout the weekend. On Friday, families can take part in storytime at the library in the morning and a free showing of Incredibles 2 in the evening. Saturday’s fun includes a Knights of Columbus pancake breakfast and theatre games with the Atlantic Ballet school, as well as a Fall Fair at Trinity United Church in Riverview on Saturday. Enjoy bouncy castles, petting zoo, kids games, face painting, silent auction, book and bake sale, a BBQ, and more. The fun goes from 10:30 to 1:30! Sunday is the annual Harvest Family Fun Day and Chilli Cook-off in the afternoon, as well as an all ages skate day at the Riverview Skatepark – which is up for an Aviva Community Fund grant to improve this fantastic facility. You can vote to help them win; did you know it’s the largest indoor skate park east of Montreal?! And an awesome spot for kids of all ages to hang out and be active? Give them a like on Facebook and a vote on Avivia – and when you pop by to check them out, be sure to tell them Pickle Planet sent you!

Saturday is the second annual Hillsborough Farmer’s Market annual harvest celebration, with vendors, a special fall photo booth, and a corn boil.

Honestly, if you can afford it, there’s no reason to cook for yourself this weekend! In addition to the corn boil and chilli cook off, it’s the weekend of the food truck festival Frichti in Dieppe! Nearly a dozen food trucks (and a beer garden!), will be located at Dieppe’s Place 1604 Friday and Saturday; there will also be bouncy castles, Art Richard on Saturday morning at 11am, and clowns on site Saturday afternoon.

Shediac’s annual fall fair is also this weekend, with amazing events for everyone, including a free Friday evening campfire with children’s performer Art Richard at Pascal Poirier Park, Saturday’s community day activities at the park (touch-a-truck, face painting, free corn boil, bouncy castles, and more), and the scarecrow contest throughout the community.

It’s also a great weekend to visit Shediac’s Neptune Drive In, with the annual fundraising battle for the IWK happening between this venue, one in PEI, and one in Nova Scotia – and the first film of the night looks like a lovely family feature! Small Foot is rated G, followed by The Meg, rated PG.

Drop in to Riverview’s Lollipops & Gumdrops on Saturday to help celebrate the store’s 10th anniversary! This is a gem of a kids’ spot in our community, with the best of local products, major brands, and a wonderful consignment section. (We hear there are cookies and giveaways happening!)

This week’s Family Favourites $2.99 feature is a movie on our must-watch list, Wonder.

At Chapters this Saturday it’s a Hot Wheels themed make-and-take, along with Wimpy Kid and Narwhal books featured in the reading station and a make-your-own comic strip activity.

Toys R Us are holding an L.O.L. Surprise unboxing event in stores Saturday morning (the first 100 children will get a gift) and a build & play LEGO City challenge.

Michael’s has some fun craft sessions planned this weekend, including decorating craft pumpkins – buy the pumpkin, use their supplies, and have someone else deal with the glitter mess! J

Scholar’s Choice is holding a Plus Plus play day from 1pm to 4m; check out their Facebook page for a video showing these versatile toys!

It’s always fun to visit Resurgo Place, but this weekend you have the added bonus of taking part in a Scavenger Hunt designed to take you around cultural landmarks in Moncton (you’ll be able to download the sheet on their website and turn it in before Sunday evening for a chance to win a prize). You can also catch Crafternoon this weekend, and watch for a new exhibit opening Thanksgiving weekend all about taste and food!

Our friends The Wiggles are back for THREE shows at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday – and as of Wednesday night, there were still a few seats available for each performance.

The 4th Repair Café takes place on Saturday from 10am until 2pm. Bring just about any item that needs fixing to the event and see if the tinkers on site can help you out! (No TVs or microwaves, please.)

Cornhill Nursery’s annual Grapefest is Saturday and Sunday; a lovely chance to visit the site, learn about small fruit and grape growing (as well as wine/cider production) during workshops, enjoy live music, and a treat from the café. Kids can enjoy the apple pressing, orchard tours, and more.

Know a child ages four or older who might like to play ringette? There’s a chance to try it out Sunday in Riverview! Beginner skaters are welcome; just bring your sense of adventure, your skates, your helmet, and some heavy gloves. Sticks and rings and encouragement will be provided!

Adventurous kids might also want to sign up for KouchXtreme on Sunday. This even for ages four to 13 has kids run, crawl, jump, and get muddy and wet! Register at the white tent on Kelly’s Beach at 1pm!

Looking for a quieter family outing on Sunday? The Moncton Library is showing LEGO Batman on the big screen in both English and French in the afternoon.

Oh, and if you know folks in Saint John, why not ask them what they’re up to this weekend? Then tell them about the incredible deals to be found on all things for kids & babies at the Grapevine Events fall sale! It’s also the site for the annual breastfeeding challenge in Saint John’s this year!

If you have an event you’d like included in the round up, it’s best to send it directly via our Facebook Page before Wednesday of the weekend it’s happening. This round up is compiled free of charge and takes hours to create each week; we’re sure things are missed that could be included, so if you want to ensure your event is here, drop us a note! For other promotional options, such as Facebook shares, blog posts, podcast sponsorships, and more, send us a note for pricing and availability. We love working with our local businesses and organizations to make sure families know all of the great things we have happening in the Greater Moncton Area!
