What to Do with the Kids this Weekend in Moncton (June 8-10)

Welcome to the weekend! We’ve got another round up full of goodies for you – but first a word about our sponsor, the 12th Annual Moncton Highland Games! If you think the Games are just about pipes & drums, think again! This is a FAMILY event you will NOT want to miss! Wagon rides, petting zoo, hands-on archery demonstrations, sheep dog trials and HUGE bouncy castles (along with all the traditional competitions, vendors, live music, and Pump House beer you’d expect!) along Moncton’s Riverfront next weekend, Saturday, June 16. Check them out online or on Facebook – and watch for a family pass giveaway on Pickle Planet on Monday! (Children 12 and under are free admission; adults are $10, $8 for students/seniors, and military and RCMP with ID receive free admission.)

A reminder that what follows is a chronological listing of some of the best weekend events we could find that we think you’d enjoy with your family. There are dozens of ongoing weekly events and local attractions that you might also want to consider; you can find those on our MEGA LIST of things to do with the kids. Through the summer months (which we’re getting into now, despite some of these cool nights!) we’ll be pairing down some of our weekend round ups as we focus on spending time creating our own family memories, but we’ll try our best to keep you informed as we go. Now, let’s get to it!

Friday is World Oceans Day! If you’re up for a road trip, the Huntsman Fundy Discovery Aquarium has all kinds of family-friendly activities planned from 10am until 8pm, including seal feedings, guided beach walk, crafts, and more. Admission is free! Closer to home, the Homarus Eco-Centre in Shediac is hosting a beach clean up on Saturday morning, followed by a BBQ.

Grab your PJs and cozy up on the gym mats for the first family movie presented by the Friends of the SES Cubs at Salisbury Elementary. The group will be showing Disney’s Coco on the big screen in the gym; $3/person to a maximum of $10/family at the door, with popcorn for sale, too! This is a fundraiser for the school.

Looking for some older movie options? The Shediac Drive In is showing Oceans 8 & Life of the Party and Breaking In and Solo. In Sussex, it’s A Wrinkle in Time and Avengers Infinity War. Your Saturday morning $2.99 option at Cineplex is Storks.

The School of Atlantic Ballet Atlantique Canada is presenting Peter Pan The Musical on Friday and Saturday at the Moncton Wesleyan Celebration Centre. More than 100 local students will take part in the production.

The annual Train Safety Day is scheduled for Saturday from 10am to 2pm. You can enjoy a free VIA train ride from the station off Moncton’s Main Street to the Hump Yard (where there are activities and safety information on display) starting at 9:45am. This is generally a very busy event, so plan accordingly! A donation to the food bank in requested for admission.

Petitcodiac and Festival Inspire are holding a street party on Saturday from 4pm to 9pm to celebration the community’s newest mural. Enjoy music from the Kendra Gale Band, The Mike Bochoff Band, the Divorcees, and more, as well as juggling bubblers, fire spinners, food truck, outdoor bar, and lots of fun. (We did previously think this was happening earlier in the week; our apologies to anyone misled by our last round up.)

Saturday the Metro Moncton Book Festival sets up at the Lions Centre on St. George Street. Visit with dozens of local authors and stock up for summer reading!

A great spot to stop on Saturday is Front Porch Mercantile, where the lovely Christa of All The Pretties will be hosting a special pop up shop. A great chance to grab some lovely, locally-made teachers’ gifts, grad gifts, or just a gift to yourself. Christa created a special gift for Pickle Planet’s third anniversary this month – check it out!

The Magnetic Hill Zoo is holding a special event on site this Saturday. FunZOOla runs from 11am until 3pm and includes a scavenger hunt, games, pony rides, bouncy castles, food, and more.

If fishing as a family is on your summer bucket list, you might want to stop by Bass Pro this weekend for a free catch & release pond on Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm, some great workshops that will set you up with the skills to head out, as well as lots of fun activities for little ones!

Saturday is also the annual YMCA Health Kids Day, where you can enjoy free activities from 10am to 1pm, including an obstacle course, Zumba, face painting, a ‘swim to survive’ challenge, onsite visits with first responders, and a free family swim from 2:30-4:30pm.

Nitro Circus returns to Stade Moncton Stadium on Saturday night; showtime is 6pm. Watch the crew perform gravity-defying tricks up to 60 feet into the sky!

Codiac Storm Lacrosse is holding a tournament this weekend. Stop by the Kay Arena Friday evening, or the Superior Propane Centre on Saturday and Sunday to catch the action.

Sunday morning head to Centennial Park to take part in the Ronald McDonald House PJ Walk for Kids. We had such a great time at this fundraiser last year! Wear your PJs, enjoy a pancake breakfast, take in the entertainment, and raise funds for families who rely on the charity while their children are in hospital. Read more about the impact of our local Ronald McDonald Room here!

The Moncton Youth Orchestra will host their season finale concert at the Moncton Wesleyan Celebration Centre on Sunday afternoon, featuring iTromboni. This is a free concert.

Sunday evening the Moncton Fisher Cats host Saint John.

We’ll wrap things up with another shout out of thanks to this week’s Round Up Sponsor, the Moncton Highland Games and a reminder that it’s not just the main fun on Saturday you should plan to attend, but also the concerts next week! There’s a free concert Tuesday night in Moncton, another free concert Wednesday night in Riverview, and a fantastic concert Friday night in the Pump House Ceilidh Tent on the Games’ grounds (Hal Betts Sportsplex) with La Viree and The American Rogues that costs just $10. (There will be food vendors on site, so children are welcome to attend with adults.)
