What to do with the kids this weekend in Moncton (Feb 7-9)

Alright, folks! I’m writing up this round up with clear skies … but that’s not expected to last. There’s a storm brewing and events and listings keep shifting, so I’m going to keep things short on details this week. WINTER CARNIVALS

Riverview Winter Carnival is postponing its kick off till Saturday – with a great afternoon of fun planned for Winter Wonderland Park with fireworks at 7pm. There’s outdoor fun planned again for Sunday, along with the annual Kiddie Karnival and much more! This weekend is also Dieppe’s Winter Carnival, also filled with sleigh rides, skating, music, and more originally scheduled over three days, February 7 – 9. You can find the full planned schedule here.

Sackville is also celebrating its’ Winter Carnival this weekend. As of this writing, the town’s outdoor dance party and fireworks will happen Sunday night, after the annual Town vs Gown Charity Hockey Game. Saturday was originally scheduled as an outdoor family fun day at Beech Hill Park; check to see if it’s still a go. Check their Facebook event for updates!

Memramcook is celebrating all month long, with this weekend’s highlight the Course Xtreme Race on Saturday. This is a free amateur ice cross downhill event (also known as Crashed Ice) with nearly 100 athletes – sure to be a great spectator sport!

Salisbury kicks off its Winter Carnival on Sunday night with a Swedish Lantern & Snow Moon Trail Walk. A lovely way to embrace winter! Plan for lots of family fun next weekend as things wrap up in Salisbury.

FRIDAY

The Birchmount School Families are planning a family movie night showing Abominable at the school on Friday; as always, be sure to check for changes to this schedule, and when school is cancelled you can expect any school-related events to be postponed as well.

The Moncton Magic host the Island Storm Friday night at the Avenir Centre.

SATURDAY

Celebrate Black History Month with a presentation at the Moncton Public Library Saturday morning with Ralph Thomas of the New Brunswick Black History Society.

Resurgo Place hosts another Constructive Destruction session on Saturday morning; bring your own item in or take apart something already on site.

Parents raising young bilingual children might want to check out a book launch happening at the Dieppe library Saturday afternoon. Je suis bilingue attempt to help explain to children why sometimes we say merci and sometimes thank you.

The $2.99 Saturday Family Favourite at Cineplex is How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day early with a special tea at Thomas Williams House; there are sessions planned this Saturday and Sunday. There will be local teas and special non-alcoholic drinks, chocolates, pastries, and more. Seating is limited; call 506-856-4327 to reserve your spot.

Lutz Mountain Heritage Museum is also holding a Valentine’s Tea on Saturday afternoon.

The second Saturday of the month is drop-in crafternoon time at the Moncton Public Library.

The second Saturday of the month is also the Kids DIY drop in project day at Home Depot.

There’s a fun basketball game planned for Saturday afternoon at the Avenir Centre, where the Bernice McNaughton Highlanders will host the Moncton High School Purple Knights in the teams’ final game of the season. This is a special partnership with the Moncton Magic and Heart & Stroke NB. Tickets available at both schools or from the Heart and Stroke Foundation at ptsarouhas@hsf.nb.ca.

Resurgo Place is hosting a neat pay-what-you-can performance on Saturday night, highlighting sound waves in an interactive audiovisual presentation.

DJ Bones is once again planning to spin some awesome tunes while you enjoy skating at the Ian Fowler Oval outside the Avenir Centre on Saturday night.

The New Brunswick Youth Orchestra and 1755 are taking the stage together Saturday night at the Moncton Wesleyan Celebration Centre. It’s sure to be a wonderful night of music celebrating Acadian culture and talent!

SUNDAY

Did you know … We cloth diapered all three kids? Yes, even with three kids born within two years of each other. It was both an environmental and a financial decision. When we started, we knew a few folks who used cloth but it wasn’t nearly as popular as it would get a few years later. We couldn’t even buy the diapers we wanted in New Brunswick when I was first pregnant! I’m thankfully far from that phase now, but some awesome mamas who are in the thick of it are holding an information session Sunday at Close to the Heart. Come out & ask questions! It’s a great option for so many reasons, but can be a little overwhelming to make the commitment. So glad this session is happening!

Mariposa Skating Club and the City of Moncton are again offering free skating lessons on Sunday morning at the Ian Fowler Oval.

Enjoy free snowshoe and fat bike rentals this Sunday at Mapleton Park from 10am until 4pm, with a guided snowshoe walk at 1pm.

Those ages 11 and older can register to make bath bombs at the Moncton Public Library on Sunday afternoon. Call 506-869-6000×3; materials are provided.

A reminder that Valetine’s Day is Friday – so you might want to do some crafting this weekend to prepare! Maplewood Studio in Moncton is having an afternoon session with treats, stamps, art for sale and more. Check the event for pricing and more details.
