What to do with the kids in Moncton this weekend (Sept 27-29)
Welcome to another busy, busy weekend, everyone!
We’ll get to all the goodies for the Moncton area in a moment, but first a quick favour to ask: if you have friends or family in the Saint John area, please let them know about the Grapevine Events’ Baby & Kids Clothing & More Consignment Sale happening at Exhibition Park on Saturday. It’s a fantastic event filled with gently-loved clothing, snowsuits, Halloween costumes, toys, books, and more – and for the final hour, most items are 50% off!
It’s Harvest Festival time in Riverview! Friday night’s highlight includes watching The Secret Life of Pets 2 on the big screen at the community hall, and on Saturday morning RCMP Constable Christy Elliott will be leading storytime at the Riverview library (call 387-2108 to register) and there’s a free swim in the afternoon. On Sunday afternoon (1-4pm), there’s the Chilli Cookoff, the Harvest Bazaar, and all kind of fun like pony rides, petting zoo, live music, and more at Caseley Park!
Shediac is also celebrating fall this weekend, with several events including a neat family scavenger hunt. A ‘treasure clue card’ (purchase for $20) leads you on a selfie tour through the village, learning about the history of Shediac as you unravel the clues. The more selfies you take, the more chances to win one of two $150 gift cards!
No need to cook this weekend – the Frichti Festival Cuisine de Rue Rotary Food Truck Festival is happening again at Place 1604 in Dieppe. Stop by Friday and Saturday to enjoy live music and nearly a dozen food trucks!
If you’ve been wondering about how to take part in the surge of climate change actions happening around the world, there is a march planned for Moncton on Friday, to coincide with similar events around the world. The global climate protest will gather in front of the Avenir Centre and walk to Moncton City Hall, starting at noon.
Friday night is the Moncton Wildcats’ season home opener, facing off against Bathurst. There’s also an afternoon game on Sunday!
And while hockey is starting, baseball is still wrapping up; the Moncton Fisher Cats play a championship series game Friday night at Kiwanis Park.
Another fall favourite is also happening this weekend – Touch-a-Truck is Saturday at the Moncton Coliseum! This is a fundraiser, so admission of $5 is charged for each person over the age of two attending.
Saturday is also Doors Open, a personal favourite, where you can explore buildings in the city and learn more about their history and architecture. On the route this year: St. James’ Gate (the former Salvation Army Citadel and Globe Laundry), the former Record House on Victoria Street, the former Tuttle Brothers Funeral Home, Notre-Dame-Du-Sacré-Cœur (former Moncton Hospital), and Stantec (the former Eastern Central Trust Building) on Main Street.
The Hillsborough Farmer’s Market is celebrating harvest season Saturday as well, with a free corn boil, special vendors, a fall photo booth, petting zoo, and more! Market open 9am-2pm, corn at 11am.
This weekend is also a great time to visit Corn Hill Nursery for their annual Grapefest, featuring seminars on growing apples, small fruits, and grapes, with live music and good eats.
If you’re up for a road trip, Saturday is a happening day in Fredericton! There’s the Etsy – Made in New Brunswick showcase with some incredible talent (hello, Christmas shopping!!), the Fredericton Regional Family Resource Centre is holding a Family Fun Day, AND the one-and-only Sheree Fitch will be reading at the Fredericton library in the morning to celebrate a new collaboration with New Brunswick-based Lulujo (You can also catch them at Chapters Indigo at 2pm)! And if you’re making a weekend of it, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery is free on Sunday and the gallery is celebrating its 60th anniversary! (The last Sunday of each month is free entry from noon until 5pm.) Enjoy a guided tour, plant painting, postcard painting, shadow puppets, live performances and more.
The 8th Canadian Hussars are hosting an open house (9am-3pm) with camouflage face painting, weapons displays, an Armoured Vehicle Tour and more at 299 Park Street in Moncton Saturday.
If you have a young swimmer (ages five to 14), able to swim one lap of crawl stroke and one lap of breast stroke, why not have them check out AquaSouls artistic swimming this Saturday evening at CEPS. A neat sport to try!
A really neat display is wrapping up at the Moncton Public Library. This is your last weekend to explore the history of female figures in comics through an art exhibit called “Hero(ïne)s”.
Anyone with a valid driver’s license can check out what it would be like to drive a race car this Saturday at the Petty Raceway Mini Stock Driver Experience.
Our friends The Wiggles are back again! They’ve been doing some pretty cool things the past few days here in the Maritimes (like shooting a video with Alan Doyle and Splash of Splash n Boots!) and they’ll be on stage at the Wesleyan Centre on Sunday for two shows. There were some tickets still available when we checked mid-week – and we can assure you The Wiggles put on a fantastic performance!
SkyZone is holding a free virtual reality demo day on Sunday. For 10 minutes at a time you can experience two of the VR games on site!
And of course there are all the trips to apple orchards, corn mazes, and pumpkin patches that would be a perfect family outing this weekend! Check out our round up of local spots to visit here.
Pssst! Did you see we’re running a contest on our Facebook page for tickets to JAHA?! This show is simply incredible & I’m sure you’re going to want to take the family. Head over to enter before Saturday night!
It’s never too early to start planning for Halloween; it will be here before we know it!
