What to Do with the Kids in Moncton (Sept 14-16)

Welcome to a busy, BUSY weekend in the GMA!

First up – my apologies if I miss anything. I spent an entire HOUR just waiting for my computer to play nice while starting this weekend’s round up, and that was after being a day late starting it! So, imagine me, tired after battling a cold … hosting a ‘welcome to kindergarten’ event … dealing with the first week of school for three tired kiddos … and a husband with some odd motion sickness/vertigo illness … and working on a major volunteer commitment … cursing my slow ol’ computer that seemed to be giving up on us all! A few attempts and a hard restart, and now it’s an hour past my bedtime and I’m STARTING this round up; if there are any ridiculous typos, this is why! So, apologies if I miss anything – feel free to chime in with anything in the comments, and as always, if you’re part of planning an event, please reach out and let us know! Searching out this information each week is not an exact science.

The annual Albert County Exhibition is underway and Friday is children’s day! Kids 12 and under are admitted free to the site. Lots of horses and other animals, amusement rides, music and more. You can find the full schedule on their website.

The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada hosts its annual Fall Star Fest in Kouchibouguac National Park this weekend. You must pay park admission, but stopping by to use the telescopes and talk with folks is free. A clear sky will show Saturn and Mars, as well as many star clusters, and more.

Need snowsuits and Halloween costumes? The 20th Moncton Multiples Consignment Sale takes place Saturday morning at the Moncton Coliseum. Gently-loved clothes, toys, shoes, strollers, and more from 250 families, all organized by size and style! Admission is $2 cash at the door; debit and cash accepted for sale purchases. Two dozen of the best local vendors will be there, too! Come for a wonderful morning of shopping!

The Moncton Wildcats are holding their annual ball hockey tournament and BBQ downtown on Saturday, starting at 8am. Come out and watch some young talent take on the Cats and enjoy an autograph session. (You can watch the Wildcats take on the Saint John Sea Dogs Sunday afternoon at the JK Irving Centre in Bouctouche.)

Also happening downtown on Saturday is the 4th annual Midland Pulling for the United Way, in which you can watch teams try to pull a transport truck! There will be activities for kids; this goes from 1pm to 4pm and also means some street closures downtown.

Moncton’s Downtown Business Art Walk takes place on Saturday. Nearly two dozen downtown businesses will invite artists into their space to display their works, and everyone is invited to come view them! You can purchase food and beverages along the way to support the event, but admission is free.

La Fleur du Pommier is opening its apple u-pick this Saturday in Cocagne. You can find our round up of local apple orchards, pumpkin patches, corn mazes and more here!

Shediac becomes home to a games bistro this weekend with Le Moque-Tortue’s grand opening on Saturday.

This weekend’s Family Favourite feature at Cineplex is E.T.! Just $2.99 a ticket!

The Salisbury Public Library is celebrating Batman Day on Saturday, with crafts making Batman wrist cuffs, a puppet, and more.

You can start your morning off in Salisbury with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the Lion’s Club. Open 7am until 10am; admission is $8 adults, $3 children ages six to 10, and free for preschoolers.

Mastermind Toys is holding a LEGO Friends Make & Take event on Saturday morning. Stop by the store when it opens; the first 100 kids will get a chance to bring home their own LEGO set!

Saturday is Becca Schofield Day and the Riverview Arts Centre will celebrate with a free concert (donations accepted for the Lion’s Sick Children’s Fun) from 7:30pm-9:30pm, with a free BBQ provided by the Riverview Lions Club.

Amherst Recreation Department is hosting a Family Fun Day on Saturday in Dickie Park. The fun begins with a parade at 10:45am, then there are inflatables, a petting zoo, food vendors, laser tag, hay maze, wagon rides, bubble blitz, and live music until 4pm.

Sunday is the annual Open Farm Day. Many farms across the province will open their gates to welcome the public to learn more about what daily life is like on the farm. Of particular interest this year is NexGen Solar Farm, the province’s first solar farm located in Mount Pisgaugh, and Perry Hill Farm, which will be offering hay rides and tours of their Christmas tree lot. Other farms near Moncton that are participating: La Fleur du Pommier, Le Verger Goguen, Windy Hill Farm, Les Petits Fruits de Pré d’en Haut, Verger Belliveau Orchard, Spring Meadows Farm, Cornhill Nursery, and Waldow Farms. Details on each, including their address, hours, and activities, can be found here.

The SPCA’s annual Paws Walk takes place Sunday at Centennial Park, 10am until 2pm. This promises to be a family friendly event with food, games, vendors, and more – including pet-friendly yoga.

Sunday also sees several community Terry Fox Walks in the Greater Moncton Area, including one in Salisbury, one in Cap-Pelé, and the Tri-Community Terry Fox Run that will start near the Event Zone on Assomption Boulevard and head toward Dieppe.

Whew! That’s quite the round up – and still so many other ideas on our MEGA list of things to do with the kids!
