What to Do with the Kids this Weekend in Moncton (Jan 26-28)

Welcome to the last weekend of January! How did that happen so fast?! That means that Groundhog Day is coming up next Friday and Valentine’s Day isn’t far behind! Did you know that Veterans Affairs will send along Valentines to Veterans? Check out this post for details; it’s a sweet way to show some love and talk with your kids about connecting with people.

Speaking of Valentine’s Day – did you get a chance to check out our Valentine’s Day Gift Guides? We’ve put together two LOCAL guides – one with unique ideas for guys & gals and another featuring vendors from the LadyBossCollective and Chocolate River Farmer’s Market. There are some incredibly fun ideas for all interests and budgets; take a few moments to check them out and maybe you’ll find the perfect gift!

One last note about February before we tackle the last weekend in January: February is also full of Winter Carnivals – watch for a round up coming soon! We’ll also be updating our Maple Sugar Camps and MEGA March Break round ups soon; please send us a note if you have an event you want to make sure we include! And if you want to make sure you see all these round ups as they’re posted, sign up for our newsletter. All the details delivered each week to your inbox!

Now, on to this weekend’s top picks for family fun!

Resurgo Place offers special family pricing on Friday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm. On Saturday and Sunday, the crafternoon project (1pm to 4pm, included with admission) is a Blubber Glove – helping explain how whales stay warm in the water. There’s also a new travelling exhibit from the Canadian Museum of History that explores a dozen seasonal celebrations through the eyes of child.

Friday nights are for Fun on Ice in Dieppe! This week enjoy disco tunes with DJ Sonny D while you skate the oval, enjoy hot chocolate, and warm up by the bonfire.

The Addams Family are headed to Sackville with weekend! The Garnet and Gold Musical Theatre Society presents the musical at Convocation Hall Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, with a matinee on Sunday.

Saturday is Family Literacy Day. Stop by the Moncton Public Library from 10am until noon for a book hunt (English starts at 10am, French at 10:15) & a bilingual music show with Pickle Planet favourite Art Richard at 11:30am! Each child in attendance will receive a free book, too!

The Early Childhood Family Resource Centre and Talk with Me are hosting a Family Literacy Day event at the centre. Feeli Tout will be reading (in French) from 10am until 11, Joanne Wilson will be on site for face painting from 11am until noon, local author Jennifer McGrath (who recently won a HUGE national award for her lovely children’s book, The Snow Knows) will read from 1pm to 2pm, and there will be a book hunt from 2pm to 3pm. This event is for children ages six and under.

Want to know what books we’re reading? Check out five of our favourite Canadian kids’ authors and let us know which authors you love to read!

Enjoy a pancake breakfast Saturday at Riverview’s Lions Club. Proceeds support the local chapter of Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Children five and under eat free; up to age 12 is $5, and adults are $7.

The Cineplex Family Favourites are back after a holiday break – and our family is thrilled that this week’s $2.99 movie is The Lego Ninjago Movie! Lots of great movies coming up; check the schedule and plan ahead for your family favourite.

Toys R Us is holding a LEGO 20-brick Make & Take Challenge this Saturday. Stop by the store between 11am and 1pm to see what you can create with just 20 bricks – that you can then take home with you! (While supplies last.)

The Moncton Magic host the Halifax Hurricanes Saturday night at 7pm at the Coliseum.

On Sunday, there are sleigh rides ($2 per person) planned for Dieppe’s Rotary Park and free snowshoe rentals and hot chocolate scheduled at Moncton’s Mapleton Park.
