What to Do with the Kids in Moncton this Weekend (May 4-6)
Schools in Anglophone East are closed on Friday, but lots of great local attractions are open! The Magnetic Hill Zoo is open for the season now, and you can always count on open gym time at the Kay Arena to help burn off energy on rainy days. On Fridays, bring the toddlers from 10am until noon, 2:15-3:30 is elementary kids, then older kids until 4:45pm. May the Fourth be with you! There are Star Wars-themed events aplenty this weekend, both on Friday as well as Saturday. The Hillsborough Library is holding a Star Wars crafternoon on Friday, and in the evening you can head to the Pat Crossman pool in Riverview for a Star Wars-themed swim; kids who bring a drawing of their favourite character swim free!
Saturday morning at Chapters you can help create a custom Droid in the store and bring home your own droid paper craft. Scholar’s Choice Saturday activities will be Star Wars-themed, too!
Other usual Saturday morning events include the $2.99 movie at Cineplex (this week it’s the tale of Ferdinand), Mother’s Day themed crafts at Michaels, and an Avengers and NERF demo at Toys R Us.
Saturday marks another annual favourite in our home – Free Comic Book Day! Head to The Comic Hunter for incredible deals throughout the store, including up to six free comics for everyone. There will be meet & greets with amazing local artists, a costume contest, a food truck on site, and more. Doors open at 8am.
Our friends at The Clayspace have a fantastic kids’ workshop scheduled for Saturday morning, creating fairy houses. This is ideal for children over the age of five; parents are not required to stay. Cost is $25 plus tax per child, with family discounts available. You are asked to register in advance.
If your family loves big vehicles, you might want to make the drive to Sussex on Saturday for their annual Touch a Truck event! This is a fundraiser for the local skating club, with admission $10 per family. There will be police, fire, ambulance, lumber equipment, BBQ, face painting, and more.
The Homarus mobile lab is back at Resurgo Place this Saturday morning; be sure to check out the new travelling exhibit and the crafternoon fun, too!
The annual Moncton Kennel Club Dog Show takes place Saturday and Sunday at the Moncton Coliseum. Admission is $5; children 12 and under are free.
The Moncton Miniature & Doll Club is hosting its annual show on Saturday from 10am until 5pm at the Don Bohan Centre in Riverview.
Sackville is celebrating its Bordertown festival this week, with lots of family-friendly programming on Saturday and Sunday. Stop by for a children’s play Saturday morning, a drumming workshop, musical performances, and more. On Sunday enjoy medieval displays and workshops of dance, fencing, calligraphy, and more, as well as the regular Make Something Sunday event, too!
The Capital Theatre is hosting a fascinating group on Saturday night, for a performance that says its suitable for children over the age of six. Flip FabriQue is an up-and-coming circus troupe consisting of six acrobats that offer a creative performance.
Sunday is a great day to head to Salisbury. You can check out the amazing Highland Park (one of our favourites!) and visit the Fire Department’s Open House! Visit the fire house, check out the gear with the staff, and enjoy a BBQ, too! The event runs from 11am until 3pm.
Also on Sunday, plan for lots of people in Centennial Park for the annual Run for Women, as well as lots of folks at Mapleton Park for the Walk so Kids Can Talk fundraiser for the Kids’ Help Phone.
Looking ahead to Monday, the Moncton library will host children’s author Lori Joy Smith for a reading. This is intended for children ages four and older; no registration required.
