Birth Plans vs Birth Intentions

For more than 40 years, pregnant women have been encouraged to create a birth plan. A set of steps that outline the process of labour, designed as a way to help expecting mothers articulate their wants and values and communicate with their healthcare practitioner before birth begins.

But life doesn’t always follow the plans we set, particularly when we’re talking about birth and parenting. Naturopathic doctor Sarah Hardy Walsh found herself struggling to balance her logistical, planning personality with the uncertainties she knew were inherent with labour. She shared her thoughts on creating birth intentions, rather than plans, on her own blog, then joined us on the podcast to discuss the topic with Jenna and Tosh.

Women should be engaging both our left and right brain in preparing for childbirth, rather than relying on one plan that deals with events that are out of our control. (Please PIN & share with the expecting moms in your life!)

Take a listen and share your thoughts with us in the comments. Did you create a birth plan? Did it help you during and after your labour and delivery? What advice would you give to an expectant mother about preparing for this journey? We’d love to hear your thoughts; sharing our experiences makes us all stronger.
